The forthcoming Hari Raya will see a multi-fold increase in traffic on the roads as muslims and non-muslims alike take behind the wheels to balik kampung to celebrate the occasion or spend the holidays with families and friends.
Mindful of the Hari Raya balik Kampung exodus, the authorities will launch a road safety campaign to remind road users (motorists, motor cycle riders and pedestrians) to put safety above all else to prevent untoward tragedies on the roads during the festive season.
The State-level Ops Sikap Ke-24 Road Safety Campaign will be launched on 23 August 2011 at Plaza Tol Zecon, Jalan Tun Abang Mohamad Salahuddin, Petra Jaya, Kuching. The campaign will be officiated by Y.B Dato Sri Michael Manyin Anak Jawong, Minister for Infrastructure Development and Communications, Sarawak cum Chairman, Sarawak Road Safety Council and the Commissioner of Police, Sarawak. The Campaign will start on 23 August until 06 September 2011.
During the campaign period, the Police and JPJ will redouble their enforcement measures and deploy additional personnel at strategic and accident prone areas to remind motorists to be extra careful on the road and to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations.
The Road Safety Council, Sarawak takes this opportunity to REMIND motorists and motor cycle riders to REFRAIN from the following dangerous road antics:
(i) Reckless driving or speeding;
(ii) Indiscriminate overtaking;
(iii) Overtaking at dangerous bends;
(iv) Overtaking at double lanes;
(vi) Not stopping on amber and red traffic lights;
(vii) Handling hand phones while driving.
